The Delhi Brief

Delhi after dark, and what it costs by day.

Delhi asks you to manage friction, not fear. You will do better with prebooked rides, small cash, and a clear district plan because distances are long and street conditions change block by block. You can eat very well, move cheaply, and stay comfortable here if you ignore anyone who redirects you from the plan you already made.

The whole Brief is below, free, with no email needed. Reviewed 31 August 2026. Prices move: treat them as the fair range, not a quote.

Is Delhi safe for solo female travelers? The short answer

Local emergency numbers, Delhi

  • All emergencies (police/fire/ambulance)112

Verified against government and embassy sources. If a number is not here, I could not confirm it and will not guess.

What actually runs here

5 scams, and the move that ends each one.

Airport taxi redirection desk

01

At Indira Gandhi International Airport, men near arrivals may say your hotel is closed, your booking area is blocked, or prepaid taxis are suspended. They try to move you to a private car or a different hotel at 3 to 10 times the normal rate. End it by using only the official prepaid taxi counter inside the terminal or an in-app Uber or BluSmart pickup.

Paharganj fake tourist office

02

Around New Delhi Railway Station and Paharganj, drivers and touts send you to an office that looks official and claims trains are full or permits changed. They push expensive car packages to Jaipur, Agra, or Kashmir. End it by booking trains only in IRCTC or 12Go, and by walking into your hotel without stopping for directions.

Connaught Place bar padding

03

In Connaught Place and Aerocity, a host may steer you into a lounge with no clear menu prices, then add service, snacks, and premium pours you did not order. The bill can jump from 1500 INR to 8000 INR fast. End it by asking for a printed menu before sitting and leaving if prices are not shown.

Metro token help hustle

04

At busy stations like New Delhi, Rajiv Chowk, and Kashmere Gate, someone may offer to help with tokens or smart cards, then overcharge or swap your card. This works best when you are carrying luggage and the queue is long. End it by using the official counter or machine only and declining all help.

Gem and handicraft detour

05

A driver on a day trip to Agra or Jaipur may say a government emporium or gem workshop is part of the route and only takes 10 minutes. You lose time and face hard selling on inflated goods. End it by saying no shopping stops when you start the ride and putting the destination directly in the app.

Real local prices

What it costs when nobody is overcharging you.

  • Airport prepaid taxi to Connaught Place600 to 800 INR [about 7 to 10 USD]If you hear 1500 INR or more, you are paying tourist pricing.
  • Uber Go from IGI Airport to Aerocity250 to 400 INR [about 3 to 5 USD]If surge pushes this near 700 INR, compare with BluSmart or prepaid.
  • Metro Airport Express from IGI to New Delhi60 INR [about 0.70 USD]Anyone offering a faster special ticket is selling nothing useful.
  • Auto rickshaw 5 km daytime ride100 to 180 INR [about 1.20 to 2.20 USD]If the driver refuses the meter and starts at 300 INR, walk away.
  • Coffee in Khan Market220 to 350 INR [about 2.60 to 4.20 USD]A plain coffee above 450 INR is high even for this area.
  • Casual dinner in Hauz Khas Village800 to 1500 INR [about 9.50 to 18 USD]Check taxes and service charge before ordering cocktails.
  • Mid-range hotel in Aerocity5500 to 9000 INR [about 66 to 108 USD]A much cheaper listing can mean a Mahipalpur property using Aerocity in the title.
  • SIM with 28 day data pack500 to 900 INR [about 6 to 11 USD]At the airport, avoid anyone offering a faster activation for extra cash.

Districts

Where you are fine at 23:00, and where you are not.

  • Connaught Place

    Fine after dark

You come here for central hotels, bars, shops, and easy Metro links. The inner and middle circles stay active late, but the radial roads empty out faster after 23:00.

  • Khan Market

Fine by day, quieter after dark

You come here for polished cafes, boutiques, and a compact, easy layout. After dinner the market thins quickly, and you will want your ride arranged before you step out.

  • Hauz Khas Village

    Fine after dark

You come here for bars, restaurants, and the lake and ruins nearby. The party streets stay busy late, but the lanes are uneven and pickup points work better on the main road.

  • Paharganj

    Not alone after dark

You come here for very cheap hotels, backpacker services, and proximity to New Delhi Railway Station. After dark it gets more chaotic, with touts, traffic, and poor pavement making short walks tiring.

  • GB Road

    Avoid

This is an old wholesale corridor near Ajmeri Gate with a red-light trade layered into upper floors. You have no reason to book here, and the area is not worth passing through at night.

After dark

Delhi gets noticeably quieter outside nightlife pockets after about 22:30, while bars and restaurants in Aerocity, Connaught Place, and Hauz Khas Village stay active later. Most people get home by app cab, hotel car, or a known driver rather than by hailing on the street. You should set your pickup point before you go inside because some lanes confuse drivers and apps. If you are changing districts late, budget extra time because a 10 km ride can still crawl.

Getting around

From IGI Airport, the cleanest arrival is the Airport Express Metro to New Delhi for 60 INR or an app cab, with Uber and BluSmart the most used options. A normal app ride from the airport to Connaught Place is usually 450 to 700 INR depending on time and terminal. BluSmart is often more predictable on price, but availability can vary by hour. Delhi Metro is excellent for distance and traffic avoidance, but interchanges like Rajiv Chowk and Kashmere Gate get very crowded, so luggage is easier by cab.
